Okay, okay, okay. I haven't picked a favorite and I probably never will. It's just not possible to pick my favorite John Hughes movie. But I have narrowed it down to Five Favorite John Hughes Movies Plus Three Honorable Mentions.
I am nothing if not decisive.
The best way to handle this topic is not in one single post, but in many, many posts over time. But first there is something that has bothered me for years and I must get it off my chest. Raise your hand if you've ever thought John Hughes and Stephen King were the same person? *raising hand*

They look alike, don't they? You see the similarity now and it has you wondering. Is it the fist to face writer's pose? Is it the the over sized 80s glasses? Is it the half Pompadour/half mullet hair 'do? We could spend days here discussing it, people. Days.
I decided to go with an obvious choice: 16 Candles (insert raucous applause here). Hons, I adore this movie. It is so choice. If you haven't seen it, I'm not sure we can be friends. Seriously. I love this movie that much.
A brief plot summary for those of you who haven't seen the movie (gasp!) or those of you not quite fluent in Hughes: Samantha Baker (expertly portrayed by a Miss Molly Ringwald) is turning sixteen and her entire family forgets her birthday because it falls on the day before her older sister, Jenny, gets married to an oily variety bo-hunk, Rudy.
16 Candles is awesome because it taught a twelve year old me lots of new stuff, like what an oily variety bo-hunk is. And that high quality romance is sitting on a kitchen table sharing a birthday cake.
Every week, I find myself quoting 16 Candles. It's true. Working these quotes into everyday conversation is truly an art form. An unappreciated art form, but art nonetheless. Here are some of my favorites:
Samantha: Donger's here for five hours and he's got somebody. I live here my whole life and I'm like a disease.
Long Duk Dong: What's happenin' hot stuff?
Grandma Helen: Oh Fred. She's gotten her boobies!
Grandpa Fred: I better get my magnifying glass.
Grandma Helen: And they are so PERKY!
Samantha: Life is not whatnot and it's also none of your business.
Ginny: You make someone a bridesmaid and they shit all over you.
Long Duk Dong: The Donger needs food!
Side note: When my blood sugar gets low and I'm starving, I've been known to smack my hands on the table and yell "The Donger needs food!". That's how ingrained in my psyche this movie is. And how mature I am.
Samantha: I can't believe I gave my panties to a geek.
And no matter how much my life can suck at times, at least no one's little brother has paid a buck to see my underwear. Pin It Now!
Hannah would have a bone to pick with you. The Breakfast Club is her fav. And "it's so choice" = Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say this was my only favorite. It's my first choice in an ongoing series of My Five Favorite John Hughes Movies Plus Three Honorable Mentions, so there's still room for The Breakfast Club.
ReplyDeleteI concur: "it's so choice" = Ferris. Another one of those movies so ingrained in my psyche that I unknowingly quote it weekly. Daily even.
What's your fave Hughes movie?
