The Long, Hot Summer

Here in the Midwest, we've had little rain this summer and are in the middle of a severe drought. It's been a great summer for going swimming at the pool, but a lousy one for farmers.

The weather forecaster on the local news is making comparisons between this summer and the last time my area was this dry. The last drought was a drought so severe that it is rarely spoken about and then only in hushed tones. That dry spell was many, many years ago. Most people living around here today don't even remember it.

The weather forecaster is carrying on like that drought happened so long ago it was before the invention of modern plumbing.

He implies that the only people who remember that dry spell are, in fact, older than dirt.

Hons, it was 1988. I looked like this:

I will be forty this October and the last time I checked, that age does not make me older than dirt. However, it does make me … um … mature enough to make old lady grunting noises while bending over to tie my shoes.

Wait. Where was I going with this again? Oh yes. I remember that last major drought. Remembering that drought and living so close to corn during this one make me appreciate seeing this in the sky last night.

Okay, sure. At first I wondered if Canada went berserk and dropped a bomb over Indiana, creating a mushroom cloud in the sky.

Then, because eventually I regain control of my imagination, I realized it was a cloud with an 'anvil' top and it meant someone, somewhere was getting rain.

Luckies.

We got squat at our house.

Except the colors of a beautiful sunset reflected in the storm cloud.

Pin It Now!

  1. Awesome pics! Maybe the anvil wasn't a sign of rain though, but more of a sign that somewhere, the roadrunner was about to give a coyote a serious concussion.

  3. On the plus side for you...the short corn stalks and curled leaves should make it easier to see any attackers approaching through the fields while you're out jogging. :)
