In the same vein as my Award Winning Mashed Potatoes (which is to say I made up the many awards and accolades), I present you with my recipe for Award Winning Hot Ham and Cheese Sammies!!
(insert applause)
Before I get too into posting the recipe and photos, I must confess that what I'm about to show you isn't really my Award Winning Hot Ham and Cheese Sammie recipe.
It's my Award Winning Hot Ham and Cheese Mini-Sammie recipe.
It's a scootch different than the original.
'Cause I've used small rolls instead of regular sized hamburger buns, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
First up, the cast of characters. They have no idea they are about to become dinner.
Poor, delusional chaps.
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.
Melt half a stick of butter. Yes. That would be half a stick. Four tablespoons. It's okay. Butter is an all natural product and all natural products are good for you, right?
Butter each half of the buns (or rolls in my case today). Make sure that you butter each half. Remember: Butter is good for you.
In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup diced onion
And 1 tablespoon of poppy seeds
Spread a bit of the mustard, onion, and poppy seed mixture onto each bun. Or (in the case of my family) lightly spread the mustard onto a couple of buns and completely omit it on a couple of others because one child doesn't like mustard. Or onions. And she thinks poppy seeds are weird.
Layer on the culinary glue, AKA the cheese
followed by the ham.
Wrap each sammie up in aluminum foil.
First one side
then the other
and finally the ends.
We need to discuss that throbbing vein in my left hand. Should I get that looked at by a professional? Is a throbbing left hand vein indicative of something more sinister going on inside of my body?
Suddenly I feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop shouting "It's not a toom-a! It's not a toom-a!".
I will call the doctor later this afternoon.
Please, please, PLEASE label the sammies if you've made some with no mustard. There will be peace all over your land. Seriously. Wars have broken out over stuff like a non-mustarder receiving mustard. Google it.
Once the labeling is done, place your carefully wrapped bundles of cheesy joy onto a cookie sheet and pop 'em in the oven for exactly one episode of the Kardashians (thirty minutes for you non-E! watchers).
Voila! Buttery, cheesy, mustardy goodness on a bun (or roll).
Enjoy!
To recap:
1/2 stick of butter, melted
1/4 cup of yellow mustard
1/2 diced onion
1 tbsp poppy seed
8 slices of ham
8 pieces of cheddar or American cheese (I highly recommend cheddar)
8 hamburger buns.
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Brush the melted butter on each half of the buns. In a small bowl, combine mustard, onion, and poppy seeds. Spread a little on each bun. Layer on ham and cheese on each bun. Wrap every sammie in aluminum foil and place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for about 30 minutes.
* I first experienced these sammies via my husband's family, but it's recently been brought to my attention that they have been big in Iowa for years. I've probably done a mutated Hoosier version of the original Iowa recipe.
** I sincerely apologize if I've offended any Iowans in the making of the hot ham and cheese sammies. I know that you all take your pork products and recipes very seriously.
*** It's never been a goal of mine to offend Iowans. Or anyone for that matter.
Pin It Now!
AWESOME PHOTO of the poppy seeds in motion!!! I'll try the recipe just because of THAT!
