Last night there was a big woo in the sky as Venus passed in front of the Sun. Officially, the big woo is called the Venus transit and it's a big deal because it won't happen again until December of 2117. Which means that I will be 145 years old the next time this happens. Chances are, if still alive, I won't give a flying fig about it because my brain will have turned to complete mush after spending so many hours watching quality television like Real Housewives of Orange County and Dance Moms. I figured I'd better take advantage of last night's opportunity.
As it was described to me, Venus would pass in between the Earth and the Sun, showing up as a small black dot sailing across the big Sun. It would be like looking for a pea passing in front of a watermelon.
I've never seen a pea pass in front of a watermelon before (and I will be 145 years old the next time this particular pea passes in front of the watermelon), so I was all hopped up to see such a phenomenon.
And look. I took pictures.
See it? Huh? Huh? Do you see Venus in front of the Sun in this photo?
How about now? Do the labels help?
Still not seeing Venus? Here. I'll zoom in a bit.
Yep. That dark dot on the Sun is Venus. Super cool, huh? You know what … it does look a lot like a pea passing in front of a watermelon.
Feel free to sing either the Frankie Avalon, Shocking Blue or Bananarama version of 'Venus' while you look at the photos. I sang the Bananarama version when taking the pictures. I'm (much to the delight of my family) still singing it.
That song is probably in your head now.
You're welcome. Pin It Now!
So were you shocked by how small the dot was? I was...I don't think our school models were to scale at all! :)
