My Thoughts On Swingers

Ah … yes. Swingers. It made my Must See list, which means that I've heard of it but never seen it. For some reason, I've always had a natural aversion to this movie. I've tried to pinpoint my aversion and the best that I can come up with is the title: Swingers.

I thought it was about, you know … swingers. As in spouse swappers. Turns out that (if you stick with it and watch the whole movie) you find out it's about dancing.

Sorry. I probably should have prefaced that paragraph with a giant blinking red SPOILER ALERT message, but let's be real here, people. Swingers came out in 1996 so I don't think I'm really ruining a surprise ending for anybody.

I will freely admit to you that I started watching this movie a couple of times, but had to shut it off. It wasn't horrible, it merely seemed pointless to me. I didn't get it.

Then I heard it was a comedy. What?! This is supposed to be funny?

I gave Swingers one last try and this time I was successful in watching the entire film. And it does have a very cute ending.

The basic premise is that a guy's girlfriend breaks up with him and six months later, he's still not over her so his buddies step in to help him move on. Apparently hilarity ensues, but not regular hilarity that I can decipher, but subtle hilarity that was elusive to me.

All that aside, Swingers may not have humored me, but it didn't disturb me. Never once did my Snuggie get thrown over my head and I think we can all agree that is a major accomplishment for any movie on my List.

Plus, the Office Space dude is in Swingers. I like the Office Space dude.

To recap: Watched Swingers and didn't really get it. I didn't particularly like it until the end. Then I liked it. In the grand tradition of Siskel and Ebert, I give this movie a solid thumbs sideways.
