New Year's Resolutions

Happy 2011! 1-1-11. How cool is that?

Can you believe it's 2011 already? When I was a kid, I always figured that by the time 2011 rolled around, I'd be tooling around town in a flying car a la George Jetson. The reality is that it's 2011 and I'm tooling around town in a red Pilot a la Honda.

Anyhoo, it's New Year's Day and the pressure is on. I have to decide if I'm going to have resolutions this year or not. And what those resolutions will be. For the last several years, I haven't resolved to do anything, mainly because I really don't like the word resolve. It used to be a good word, but then it became a carpet cleaner. Now whenever I hear the word resolve, I immediately think of the mysterious stains on my living room carpet and wether or not Resolve will completely irradiate them. This leads me to ponder the spots on the Honda's floor mats and whether or not Resolve will get them out. Which of course makes me wonder if Resolve only works on carpet or if you can (in a pinch) use it on clothes or countertops. At this point I realize that we're a very messy family. Then I forget about resolving to do anything.

The whole point of a New Year's Resolution is to better yourself in the new year. And I could use some bettering. Perhaps I will spend 2011 becoming a more cultured and refined person. Swanky and cosmopolitan. Civilized and enlightened. You know, a lady. Which in my case would mean less burping and more Public Radio. Yeah, I can do that. I hereby resolve to be more sophisticated and highbrow. Oh, wait. Resolving to be more culturally aware means that I would have to wean myself off of Desperate Housewives to watch quality programming like … well … crap. Cultured folks don't really watch tv. You don't see too many worldly intellectuals getting together to eat caviar and watch Brady Bunch reruns, do you? Sigh. Baby steps, people. Baby steps.

Taking my new resolution to heart today, I made a valiant (baby step) effort to better myself and take a stab at a little culture. I shut off the Kardashians and went to an art museum. All was well until I had a potty incident, but I will tell you that story in a later post. Toilet experience aside, I felt very smooth walking out of the art museum. Classier, too. And not because I was rocking a new pair of Nikes. Okay, not only because of the Nikes - I had on new Levi's, too. I felt better about myself because I had made a small resolution to get a little culture. And I did.

So Happy New Year from one newly sophisticated, culturally aware lady. Pinkies up, baby! Pin It Now!
